Dare to Dream: Interview with Inspiring Children’s Author Sheri Fink

Sheri Fink is a best-selling, award-winning children’s author who’s passionate about childhood literacy and self-esteem. Her first book, The Little Rose, has been a #1 best-seller on Amazon for over 55 weeks,  became the #1 Top-Rated Children’s eBook on Amazon, and recently won a gold medal in the Readers Favorite International Book Awards. Her second inspirational children’s book, The Little Gnome, was published in March 2012 and debuted at #1 on the Amazon best-seller list.
Sheri’s next book, Exploring the Garden with the Little Rose, debuts on October 2. It’s designed for children ages 2-5 to help them learn the alphabet and garden vocabulary. It features many of the characters from The Little Rose, The Little Gnome, and even upcoming books.

What do you write?
I love writing books that inspire and delight children while planting seeds of self-esteem that can have lifelong benefit. I am so happy and grateful to be living my dream!

What has been your favorite part of your author journey so far?
For me, some of the best parts of being an author are hearing that your book has an impact in the lives of children and empowering others to achieve their dreams. I love receiving fan mail and hearing stories from the children and adults who have fallen in love with The Little Rose and The Little Gnome

As a writer, the moment you open the first case of your books and see your creation in print format is truly magical. Even after having it happen three times for me, it’s still a precious and joyfully emotional moment.

Another aspect that I really enjoy is being able to put my pets into my books. Exploring the Garden with the Little Rose has a kitten in it that looks just like an illustrated version of my kitty, Poohbear. It’s something I never thought about before, but it’s really fun to see your pet in a book. My second kitty, Samantha, will be making a cameo appearance in my next book, The Little Firefly.

I’m so grateful to my readers and I’m honored to make a positive difference in the lives of children worldwide.

Which author most inspires you?
I’m very inspired by J.K. Rowling. Before I read the first Harry Potter book, it had been a long time since I stayed up all night reading a book because I just had to know what happened. I love that her books and her characters are so full of heart. Reading her series and hearing her inspiring personal story really moved me and enabled me to see new possibilities for my writing.

What’s your favorite quote?
I have a few favorites:
"The person who says it cannot be done should not interrupt the person who is doing it." ~ Chinese Proverb

"Go to the edge of the cliff and jump off. Build your wings on the way down." ~ Ray Bradbury

"Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind." ~ Dr. Seuss

What’s next for you?
My next book is Exploring the Garden with The Little Rose to be released on October 2, 2012. My next book in The Little Series, The Little Firefly, will be published in March 2013. I’ve been doing a lot of speaking at schools, libraries, writers’ conferences, and book festivals and look forward to continuing. I’m also excited to be in the early stages of inventing a board game based on the characters in The Whimsical World of Sheri Fink.

Moving? Save Time and Stress with This Handy Timeline

Guest Blog from The Betty Brigade

Moving?  Save Time and Stress with This Handy Timeline

“Organizing is what you do before you do something, so that when you do it, it is not all mixed up.”
--  A.A. Milne

That sentiment may sound a bit wacky, but it’s really true.  Organizing involves doing something ahead of time – i.e., planning -- to make what comes later, smoother and easier.  And this principle can be applied to many, if not all, areas in life.

Moving, for instance.

The time it takes to create a good plan is far exceeded in time saved.  Planning also reduces stress, confusion, broken items… You get the picture.   A good timeline will help you capture the important elements of the moving process, while also breaking down the process into segments.  To quote another great mind, Henry Ford, “Nothing is particularly hard if you divide it into small jobs.”

Here is our suggested timeline.  This can, of course, be adjusted according to your specific dates and deadlines, but it’s a good place to start:

TWO MONTHS BEFORE THE MOVE:
n  As much as possible, get rid of what you don’t need or love.
n  Make a room-by-room inventory of what is left.
n  If you have children, arrange for their schools to transfer their records to the new schools.

SIX WEEKS BEFORE THE MOVE:
n  Start using up supplies and food.
n  Measure furniture and décor dimensions to make sure they’ll fit in your new place.
n  If you’re doing your own packing, purchase supplies -- and get packing!
n  Get at least three estimates, then choose a mover.

ONE MONTH BEFORE THE MOVE:
n  Fill out a change of address card at the post office, or do it online at usps.gov.

n  Notify banks, creditors, magazines you subscribe to of your change of address.

n  Alert utility companies to disconnect services the day after you move and to have service activated several days before you arrive at your new home.

n  Arrange for medical records to be sent to new health care providers.

TWO WEEKS BEFORE THE MOVE:
n  Empty your safe deposit box and close the account.  Place the contents of the box in a security box that contains your moving estimate, along with important financial records and documents.  (You will take this with you on moving day.)
n  Confirm arrangements with the moving company.

ONE WEEK BEFORE THE MOVE:
n  Refill prescriptions.
n  Cancel newspaper subscriptions.
n  Obtain health certificates from your vet for any pets.
n  Pack the suitcases you’ll be moving yourself, with clothes, toiletries and jewelry.

THREE DAYS BEFORE THE MOVE:
n  Reconfirm with the moving company.
n  Plan to pay the movers, including tips, and check on accepted payment methods.
n  Defrost the freezer if you’re moving the fridge.  You’ll be eating take-out for a few days!

MOVING DAY:

n  Make sure that the USDOT number on the side of the truck matches the one on your estimate.
n  The last box(es) on the moving truck should hold all the bedding, so you can make the beds as soon as they’re set up.  (You’ll appreciate this at bedtime!)

And we can’t resist one more quote to wish you happiness in your new home!

“May the roof above you never fall in,
And those gathered beneath it never fall out.”
-- Irish Blessing
