“You can do it.
You can do more.
Don’t stop now.
Push a little harder.
I know you can.”
These are the words that the teacher spoke into her microphone as we were sweating and pumping our legs on our spinning bicycles in spinning class.
Every time she said this to us it pushed me harder and faster. It made me last. When I wanted to slow down it made me stick with it. It got me to the end.
It also got me thinking.
Wouldn’t it be great to hear that voice in one's head all the time, ensuring each of us that we can do it. Telling us to keep going. Telling us not to quit and keep it up, that you are doing great. A virtual cheerleader in your head. A voice that believes in you and fills you with confidence and the will to continue and finish.
So I offer this voice to everyone. You can choose also to have this voice in your head. Replace the voice that tells you you can’t, or you’re not enough, or it’s too hard with that voice that tells you how amazing you already are; this voice believes in you no matter what.
Picture this… you’re in a courtroom and your big, huge, juicy dream and goal is on trial. There’s a judge and two lawyers and you’re the plaintiff with the big dream. The trial starts and the opposing lawyer stands up and tells the court “I object, this person can’t possibly make their dream come true. They don’t have what it takes. They’re not talented enough, not pretty enough, not rich enough, and not smart enough.”
And the judge says “Objection overruled.”
The judge turns the case back to your lawyer who says “My client must have his/her dream come true - that’s why they were put here. In this life my client was tasked with doing this particular work or joyful thing in this world. And they are so talented and so smart and so capable and so worthy of having their dream come true.”
And the judge says: “The court agrees. Please continue.”
Your lawyer tells the court that you can do it, can complete it, can make it happen, they know you can, they believe in you.
The judge shakes her head in agreement.
Now the opposing lawyer stands up with an objection: “The plaintiff is not enough. No way. Not them. Baloney. Never happen!”
And the judge cuts him off and says: “All your limitations are overruled!”
She looks back at your lawyer and says “Please continue.”
You lawyer, the defense attorney, addresses the jury and court and says: “This person has a wonderful dream and goal. We all have dreams and goals. Life is very fast. We can make it hard and we can choose to suffer -- or we can choose for it to be wonderful and make our dreams come true. I say to my client: You can do it. You can do more. Don’t stop now. Push a little harder. I know you can. Your dream is important and we believe in you.”
The jury then hands the judge the verdict. The judge reads the verdict: it says the plaintiff shall receive her dream and her goal. Further, we stand behind her and know, for sure, she can do it.
The jury also charges the prosecuting lawyer with stinking thinking and silences all his objections forever more. His penance going forward is to express only kind, nurturing, supportive things to say to himself and everyone else for the rest of his days.
With that court is adjourned!
Choose to envision this funny court setting anytime you have a self-limiting thought and your inner voice acts up like the opposing lawyer to your own dreams. Instead you can adopt the attitude of the supportive lawyer, the supportive judge, and the jury who awards you your dream. Silence that limiting voice and choose only the one that tells you to move forward and encourages you to do it.
Experience the voice that pushes you just a little further and boisters you up - in real life as well. Find someone in your life to buddy up with - a friend or co-worker or someone in a chat room, someone you’ll be honest with. Share with each other what your dream is and how you’ll go about achieving it. Each time you talk be sure to tell each other with sincerity “I know you can do it. Push yourself a little harder and further.” Check in with each other each day or several times per week, and share the actions steps you’ve taken and any results achieved. Be cheerleaders for each other to help cross that finish line and enjoy living the reality of your dreams come true!
Be an awesome jury who always rules in your favor.
Forget all the apostrophe "t's" you use so freely ~ I can't I don't, I haven't. All it really means is I won't.
And remember on the road to creating your dream and your goal:
“You can do it. You can do more. Don’t stop now. Push a little harder. I know you can.”
